Tips to Make the Most of Your Media Relations Efforts
By Nancy S. Juetten

Excerpt from GET MEDIA SAVVY!
The value of your company’s brand and reputation can grow as a result of favorable media coverage captured over time. However, securing good coverage can prove challenging if you don’t know how to work with the media. To pack a punch into your media relations results, consider these tips. If you want the media to take interest in your business success story, take interest in the media. Writers and editors want to be first with news and great stories. They review mounds of mail, e-mail, and faxes each day. In addition, they scan competitive media and wire service stories to select news to share.
With all this competition, how can you make sure your story gets the attention it deserves? Monitor the media outlets that you think are right for your story. Read the stories of reporters who cover your industry. Most importantly, take time to prepare concise, clear and compelling pitches that show why your story is timely, newsworthy, and relevant. Have some fun, be creative in your approach, and give the reporters something they won’t find elsewhere. Many factors determine whether or not your story captures the coverage. These two questions top the list: ~ Does your story fit within the coverage area and editorial profile and plans of each particular media outlet? ~ What else is making news today?

Conquering the Fear of Promoting Yourself or, Do You Like to Talk to Strangers? By
Raleigh Pinskey
An excerpt from GET MEDIA SAVVY - The Ultimate eGuide to Promote Your Products, Services and Ideas to the World!

The Small Business Association reports that the top two reasons businesses fail in the first two years are poor management and lack of promotion, which, along with the staple of advertising, includes the overview of branding utilizing PR, publicity and marketing.
And nowhere in their entire list do they consider attitude. I would definitely add attitude to this critical measurement. I fact, I would make it number one on the list.
I founded my PR, Branding and Public Relations company The Raleigh Group, in 1980. Through my best selling books, seminars and information products I’ve mentored millions of people who are just entering the business arena, seasoned veterans, and the scale markers in between.
There is no doubt in my mind that the difference in why some succeed at PR, branding public relations and marketing while others don’t, ultimately comes down to attitude. Attitude is a crucial and large part of promotion, particularly if you approach it with an attitude of fear.
If your chosen profession depends on promotion, success will depend on you think about the following statements. Do you harbor a fear of promotion? Are you in business to revenge a teacher or relative who told you that you would never succeed? Are you a people pleaser by nature? Do you like to solve problems? Do you enjoy dealing with people and their needs? Do you feel you are not very interesting and maybe what you have to talk about is not innovative or informative, or useful?
When I was growing up, I was constantly told that what I had to say was not that important, and why would anyone want to listen to what I had to say? And, I was told, “not to tell anybody how bright you are because no man will want to marry you and you’ll end up an old maid.” I carried that with me for a very long time.

Today has been another remarkable, information rich day for everyone who attended the Women’s Media Summit.
We began our day with an interview with Christine Louise Holbaum of PressKit24/7 - She called in from her home in Germany and shared some great tips about how to manage our media message and giving us great examples from companies who do it well, such as Nike’s “Just Do It” to everyday folks like Dr. Bissoon who wrote a book called “The Cellulite Cure.” She talked about creating an online press kit, a radio one-pager and gave examples of great story ideas we can learn from in our quest to pitch the media.
Next up was Penny Haynes of 1st Podcast Publishing who shared how to syndicate our how Internet Radio or TV show. Penny shared interesting statistics - for instance, did you know that 60% of viral ads initiated by advertisers are video and that 43% of US online video viewers get videos by clicking on links in email messages from people they know. What does that mean to us? It means that we need to be using video to get our message out to our target audience and to the media. She talked about the simplicity of creating your own video including the low start-up costs. In fact there are lots of great resources which are FREE to use and you can have a video in no time.
We were delighted and honored to interview Samantha Ettus, the creator of the bestselling Experts’ Guides series who shared her story about how she got celebrities to write chapters in her book, how she approaches the experts, selects them, works with them and what prompted her to write the first book in the first place. Samantha also talked about how we can use our personal brand to garner media attention and shared some great resources with our guests.
Marilyn Jenett was due to speak next and was unable to be with us. - Not to worry, we will reschedule her session and let you know when that will take place. So instead of cancelling the hour with our guests we had an enlightening and interesting hour interviewing attendees about their media successes, projects they were working on and the principles of the Laws of Attraction. Special thanks to Roy Montero for suggesting the session, to Julia Rhodes for sharing her experiences with taking her dry erase eraser to market, and to Catherine Franz of Abundance Center for carrying on a great conversation on the laws of attraction. In fact, as I write this (8:31pm Eastern Time) the conversation is still going strong….
So if you are interested in listening to any of these sessions or the ones to come, you an register and receive access to all the audio files, workbooks, handouts and powerpoint presentations that were shared with all.

6 Personal Branding Platforms from Raleigh R Pinskey - PromoteYourself.com
My hero, circus impresario P.T. Barnum, said, “Without promotion a terrible thing happens, NOTHING! You might have built the better mousetrap or have the solution to community issues, but if you don’t tell your target market where you are, how they can buy your goods or engage your services? How are they going to beat a path to your door?
It doesn’t matter if you get involved with the entire community or just in your field. What matters is that you grow an image of gold that will bring you gold in many different shapes and sizes.
1. Offer teleclasses to a global market. You don’t have to go through the expense of a hotel room. Utilize the meeting space at your community, religious or business affiliations. Offer to speak for an association, service club, adult education facility, or at a business or religious organization. They will announce you in their newsletter before the event, and usually capsulate your presentation in the issue that follows.
2. Joint venture with complimentary professionals and cross promote. Collaborate on articles for each other’s newsletters, Web sites and trade journals to help boost your databases. If you own a shoe store, offer to put your shoes on an apparel shop’s window mannequin with a note that reads “compliments of Sam’s shoes.”
3. Showcase your goods or services by placing them in organization auctions or raffles. Add a one-on-one consultation to enhance the value. I bundle my products in two’s, three’s and more to create various bidding levels. Offering different levels shows the scope of what I offer.
4. Host your own Internet TV or Radio show. Take this opportunity to reach out to the people with whom you want to do business. An interview often gets you the person who wouldn’t return your sales calls. Show the tape in your store or waiting room. Transcribe the tape and send it out as a special report to your database.
5. Write articles for magazines, newspapers and the Internet ezines.
6. Mentor others. If your time or staff is limited, sit on the board of organizations that encourage mentoring and contribute your organizational skills and expertise to developing the program. Mentoring is a masterful way to develop a sphere of influence and seek out Joint Venture partners.
